Mouth Trouble

Here is our happy smiling girl, even though we had a struggle this last week. On Tuesday we noticed some white sores inside her lips and her cheek. We weren't sure what it was, but kept an eye on it, and when they were a bit worse on Wednesday, we decided to take her in to the doctor's office, just to get them checked out and make sure they weren't really something like Thrush. The nurse practictioner we saw was very nice, and concluded that they were blisters and were very painful. She said that Elise had probably had a reaction to something acidic that she had eaten, or it could have been caused by stress. She swabbed the sores for some testing to make sure there wasn't something viral happening. The prescribed treatment was to mix benedryl and mylanta in equal parts and apply them to the sores. We ran into our doctor and nurse as we were leaving, and Dr. Welling said that the sores could also have been caused by Elise putting something in her mouth, (which happens a lot), that didn't agree with her, or was caustic. We've tried to stay away from acidic things, and think it may have been a reaction to some full strength orange juice that she had for the first time that Sunday. Well, we've been following the treatment and the sores are getting way better. We had a small setback on Friday when she gagged herself and threw up a couple times. The acid from that made the sores look a little worse that day, but they are doing way better now. Elise has been a trooper, and even though the nurse practitioner said the sores were painful, she hasn't been fussy or unwilling to eat. We're grateful for great medical people and medicine that is making our girl all better! The cute picture was taken in the midst of all the mouth owie drama, and you'd never know she wasn't 100% healthy to look at that smile!
