More Updates and Clarification

Well, here we are, at another weekend. We are still working in a challenging situation here. I guess I didn't really explain where we are or what we are doing. Logan works for a great residential construction company here in Alaska. A couple years ago, the father of one of the owners of the company, decided to build a house attached to one of the company storage units in a residential neighborhood. The house is all put together as far as walls and floor and ceiling. The inner workings and some details are not quite there yet. This man moved down south for retirement purposes, but was still coming back to live here for the summers, to escape the heat, and enjoy the Alaska weather. For many reasons, this last summer was his last one. He's going to be living down south for the rest of the year, so this house was going to be empty. Logan's company decided they could use a renter who would be able to trade labor on the house in exchange for living in the house. They offered to let us stay here, when we all came back up to Alaska together in August. Logan spent many, many, many hours this summer working on the house. The previous tenant had dogs, and a house full of a life time of belongings. Logan helped clean things up, pack things up, and get the house a little more completed. He put siding on the outside, painted the whole thing inside (it was a deep pink/purple and is now white), took off the sliding shower door in the guest bathroom and replaced it with shower curtain, and helped get the slab and wall done for the washer and dryer area among other things. His good friend did the tile in the entry way and both bathrooms while he was in Oregon this last time with us. His other good friend put the trays in all the windows (I think that's what it's called, it is basically the lining that covers the rough edge of the sheet rock), and just yesterday he came by and put the door in for the master bathroom (so now we have a door!). We are still working on finishing other things, and are waiting for carpet to be put in the back half of the house (all four bedrooms). So, we have removed everything from those rooms, and all of it is sitting, sorted into piles for each room, in the front main room which comprises the kitchen, dining, and living room areas. This is a huge house, and is a humongous blessing for us, as the cost of living here is so high, and we are still trying to complete the getting out of debt on a reduced work schedule due to the economy slow down. There are some quirky things (like the kitchen cabinets not having doors), and some things that are really cool (like the island in the kitchen. It is lower than the counter tops. Which means its more at my level than the counters in the kitchen. That's awesome!!! We're gonna have fun making some craft and food projects on that large, flat surface....as soon as we get space around it cleared away.) There is also a huge pantry, plugs everywhere you need them, and lots of floor space for doing fun things with our girl.
So, the situation is, that the previous tenant moved out, and Logan cleaned lots before he came down for our last visit in Oregon. He got a refrigerator and got that into the house. He also discovered mice in our storage unit, so he emptied it, piling all our belongings in the front room, and planned to have the carpet installed before we got back. Well, the carpet still isn't here, but they tell us we're on the schedule for this coming Thursday (we're keeping our fingers crossed). And the good guys that did the tile and window trimmings had time and space to work before we got here as well. The difficulty was that with all that work going on, and the fact that no one was living in the house for three weeks.......that meant when we got here on Sunday night around midnight, there was dust/dirt everywhere, as well as the remnants of construction....including a couple saws and ladders down low. Don't worry, we got the saws moved before our girl got to them....one just barely, but we're all doing better now that we're able to child proof as we are living here.
So, we're still finding things that are not quite clean enough for a two year old, and we're cleaning those things. And we're waiting for the carpet to be in so we can move in beds, and dressers, and finally unpack. It was good the carpet wasn't in, as Logan was able to use the odor eliminating cleaners on the floors again, just to get those last dog odors out. Now that we're ready for carpet, we're kind of in limbo until its here. We've run out of things we can unpack for now....The bathrooms are completed, and we even have a washer and dryer now. The kitchen is the room that is farthest along. We've gotten most everything washed and put into the many drawers. Now we're working on stocking up on food items. Yesterday we made the big trip and got flour and sugar, and this morning we woke up to Logan making cinnamon rolls from scratch! Hooray for Logan!
That's the update for today. We have a bathroom door on the master, and finally have an improved date for carpet installation. And Logan is fabulous and a very hard worker. We can see how much he loves us and is happy to be all back together by the effort it took to make this situation work out and be ready for us to live in. We really love being together. Today, we were running errands, and needed to go to Logan's work. Elise was so excited. She got to see Daddy's work. She also told me, while we were in the car together, that when Daddy goes to Alaska, she misses him. We're still trying to help her understand that we are all in Alaska, all together and that some of the other things she misses are in Oregon and we can't go to them (like dance class and seeing family). We're getting there. For now, we are going to enjoy having a door, and are going to get ready for having a day off tomorrow.....
